abstract="This case study is drawn from research in progress that seeks the views and perceptions of children and young people who have been abused about their experiences of victimization and subsequent interventions. The subject of the article is an adolescent boy who experienced extreme abuse by his mother's partner. The mother also suffered severe violence in the relationship, which the boy witnessed. The impact of the abuse has left this boy deeply disturbed and this has been confirmed in psychiatric assessments. The article is based on a research interview and presents this young person's descriptions of his experiences of abuse and his attempts to survive. The paper draws out the parallels between this boy's experiences as an abuse victim and those in a hostage situation. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.<p />",
