abstract="An algorithm is proposed for the edge bending stress in a slab- on- grade concrete pavement under complex loading and boundary conditions using a personal computer spreadsheet. The method relies on dimensional analysis for data interpretation and overcomes the limitations imposed by several of Westergaard's assumptions. The procedure is used to reproduce the "Equivalent Stresses" in the 1984 PCA Guide, and subsequently to investigate the effects of replacing conventional truck dual tires by a "super-single" (wide based) tire. The significant detrimental effect of "super-singles" is clearly observed. A sensitivity analysis of the effect of a number of other variables is also presented.
",
