abstract="This article lists the various applications for weigh-in-motion (WIM) systems and briefly reviews the various different types available. The types include: a) bridge systems (load cell or strain gauge); b) bending plate weighpads; capacitive pad systems; c) piezo cable systems; d) capacitive system strip. The performance capabilities for temporary and/or permanent application are reviewed briefly. Details about typical installation procedures, site selection, system calibration and factors affecting performance are also presented. An example of test results obtained using a high speed WIM system at Ross on Wye are provided. Vehicle axle and gross weight readings were recorded at this site and compared with those obtained at a static weighbridge located just upstream from it. The results show a standard deviation of 6% and an Average Impact Factor of -4% for the gross weights for vehicles tested at random whilst the results for the known weight test vehicle resulted in a 4% standard deviation.<p />",
