abstract="Safety in commercial vehicles has reached a high standard. Seen against the mileage driven and the share of total traffic volume, commercial vehicles account for a significantly lower-than-average share of accidents involving injuries to persons. Development activities for further improvements of active safety are focused on longitudinal, transverse and vertical dynamic movement through to automatic control of the vehicle. Driver assistance systems such as Electronic Braking System, Stability Control and automated mechanical transmissions as Eurotronic support the driver in avoiding and overcoming critical situations. In view of the need to optimise and network the numerous individual systems involved, the use of electronic intelligence has become indispensable. The paper describes the state of the art of these systems and shows tendencies of further developments.<p />",
