abstract="This article shows that a perturbational testing method (PTM) can be used to model: a) the mechanical transfer properties of either structures or structural elements and b) changes in these transfer properties caused by an increase in the load or by any degradation in the structure. The underlying principles of the method are illustrated by considering lateral vibration and lateral buckling in beam columns. Evidence is provided to suggest that the method can provide insight into the mechanisms involved in the interaction of bridges and road vehicles.<p />",
