abstract="The mechanical pretensioner described in this paper has been in production since 1989. The pretensioner is an all mechanical solution bolted into the seat at the stansard buckle attachment point. The pretensioner van trigger and complete the pretensioning operation before an unrestrained mass has moved 20 mm forward, and its threshold level can be set so that inadvertant triggering can be avoided. Test results show that the use of buckle pretensioner will mean a less severe head impact with the steering wheel. The paper concludes that the mechanical buckle pretensioner is a cost effective device to supplement the standard three point belt.<p />",
