abstract="In this paper an overview of 25 years of developing passive and active safety systems is presented, within the ESV program. The first international technical conference on ESV was held in Paris in 1971, at which the fundamental objectives of the ESV program were given. Over the 25 year period it is concluded that the ESV program has provided stimuli for progress in automotive technology and road safety, and has led to progress in interdisciplinary and international cooperation.<p />",
