abstract="The role of socialization has begun to attract attention in transportation planning. In this study, we investigated the effects of socialization on travel in the context of a developing country. We focused on university students' activity-travel behavior as influenced by the level and form of their socializing practices. We hypothesized that socialization would greatly affect the number of side-trips students took while returning home after class. Data were collected at pre-selected universities in Metro Manila. Path analysis results suggested that certain types of socialization had significant effects on the frequency of participants' side-trip as they were returning home. Furthermore, social network size had a significant effect on patterns of after-class activity travel. Overall, the results suggest that socialization provides sound motivation for trip generation and should be considered in transportation planning processes in developing countries.<p />",
