abstract="There is consensus within Europe that drunk drivers represent a major traffic safety concern. In the European Union, they represent 1-2% of drivers, yet 30-40% of driver fatalities or over 10,000 deaths/year. Public support for alcohol interlocks, which prevent the drunk driver from operating a vehicle when his/her breath alcohol concentration determined from a breath sample is over a preset limit, has grown in recent years and is now over 95%. This article discusses the efficacy of alcohol interlock programs and also looks at the anticipated acceptance of alcohol interlocks by safety-sensitive markets such as commercial transport.<p />",
