abstract="In addition to claiming nearly 1.1 million lives worldwide every year, road traffic collisions have significant economic impacts. Traffic safety, particularly accident reduction, is becoming a major focus of many nations, nearing congestion mitigation in importance. In this feature on situational awareness, the author explores how technology and safety combine to provide important information on adverse traffic conditions to road users. This information allows them to avoid potential accidents by making the right choices. Technological advances profiled include radar and the node event warning system, a hardware/software combination that reports traffic events using various outputs and detects up to 16 user-defined occurrences by working with remote traffic microwave sensors.<p />",
