abstract="The selection of one of 3 traffic design alternatives which included the control of left turns through the use of raised medians is discussed. To provide decision makers with current and comprehensive information on which a sound technical decision could be based, a review was made of literature as well as a survey of transportation and traffic engineers throughout the U.S. The results of the literature review are presented including both the advantages and disadvantages of raised medians. The results of the survey are tabulated. The majority fo responses indicated the following: most agencies prefer medians for a six-lane arterial; U-turns were considered safe and appropriate to supplement the street circulation system; and design decisions should be made on site specific conditions. Conclusions drawn from the study are presented, and recommendations are made.<p />",
