abstract="This is an outline of the bacckground work and safety concerns that led to the preparation of the technical recommendation that set out standards for the installation and upgrading of zebra crossings, statutory requirements and recommendations on warrants, location criteria, and maintenance. The conclusions are presented of the study of signalized and unsignalizsed pedestrian crossings near schools. The concept of intervisibility (visibility and communication between pedestrian and driver) that is essential to safe and efficient operation of pedestrian crossings is discussed. The concept of intervisibility distance is also discussed. Crossing length and refuge islands are discussed, as well as the length of bar pavement markings of zebra crossings, poles and Belisha beacons, illumination and floodlighting. Warrant and loctional criteria are reviewed, and other design details are noted.<p />",
