abstract="This is the summary of the results of a study of accident data for two alternate interstate routes, I-640 and I-40 through Knoxville, Tennessee. The study focused on the safety of trucks using these routes. Economic and environmental concerns were also addressed. Accident histories were examined by use of the Tennessee Roadway Information System (TRIMS) Accident file. Study results are tabulated. The overall accident rate for multi-unit trucks on I-640 was much lower than that for I-40. The rerouting of some or all of the multi-unit trucks from I-40 to I-640 is considered, and 2 possible rerouting plans are suggested. Possible accident reductions that would result are also noted. The rerouting only of trucks carrying hazardous materials is also considered.<p />",
