abstract="This is a report of part of a project aimed at meeting the need for more knowledge about the safety aspects of the various components of the road network. Accident data collected in 1981 from the metropolitan area of Melbourne illustrate a technique for examining the performance of road networks using functional road class, accident type, and 'cluster' analysis. The predominant accident types for the whole network were identified, and the type with the greatest frequency is used to show the phenomenon of clustering at the intersections along the various road classes.<p />",
