abstract="A field study was made to examine the effects of enforcement on traffic speeds on urban roads. The study investigated the immediate and longer-term effects of the presences of an enforcement symbol. This article describes the field study and discusses its implications for the deployment of enforcement resources in New South Wales. The study demonstrated that the presence of a police vehicle on an urban road may reduce the number of vehicles exceeding the speed limit approximately two-thirds. It was also shown that it was possible to produce a memory effect of police presence in an urban situation. The study also showed that the drivers return to their normal driving behavior soon after passing a police vehicle. Police enforcement would therefore be most suitable for treating particular problem sites, and other methods to reduce urban driving speeds shold be investigated.<p />",
