abstract="This paper discusses the effect of modified signs and flashing beacons on reducing speeds in school zones, and summarizes Des Moins, Iowa experience in using oversized 25 mph speed limit signs and flashing beacons at school zones along 35 mph multilane roadways. The local situation is described, and the details are given of the evaluation which began by installing the new signs at 4 of 7 Type 1 schools. The other Type 1 schools were used as controls. The speed data collected is tabulated. It is noted that following installation of the signs, average speeds were reduced by 9.3 %, and a year after, speeds were maintained at a 7 % reduction. It is believed that the new signage is appropriate and beneficial: the reasons for this conclusion are set forth.<p />",
