abstract="A study was conducted to evaluate a type of non-standard lane marking known as the Mountain Pavement Marking (MPM) in Virginia. The MPM is used on two-lane highways in mountainous areas and consists of a single broken yellow line supplemented with &quot;Pass With Caution&quot; signs. The standard MUTCD (Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices) passing and no passing zones are not marked, which results in the fact that the passing maneuvers are not prohibited even when sight distances are inadequate for prevailing speeds. The methodology included a before and after study of the traffic characteristics at selected sites. The before study entailed data collection with the sites marked with MPM and the after study entailed data collection when the sites were remarked with MUTCD marking patterns. This article documents the results of detailed statistical analyses carried out to determine whether significant differences existed between the before and after data.<p />",
