abstract="This is an exploration of the application of intelligent vehicle-highway systems (IVHS) in rural areas. The research examined IVHS technology that potentially could improve safety on rural roads. This article explores some of the approaches taken in the study, and summarizes the results of design and evaluation activities for a pilot system that can be implemented in a rural setting. The pilot system and the evaluation approach described here address several needs identified in rural areas of Utah as well as in the nation.<p />",
