Research is reported that evaluated current standards and practices for the display shown to drivers upon malfunction of the control equipment at signalized intersections. Current engineering good practice is described, as well as field measurement of entering sight distasnce. Interviews with traffic sengineering agencies are reported, and conclusions and recommendations are presented. It is pointed out that ther could be a problem regarding flashing operation that needs to be addressed by the traffic engineering profession.<p />",
