abstract="This study attempted to find the easily quantifiable variables that can explain the number of accidents in the rural areas of the 50 administrative divisions of Greece. Five variables were examined: length of the main and secondary network, population and tourist activity, morphology of the ground, and the number of intersections. The study examined separately the main (national) and the secondary (provincial) road network, using different variables for each one to account for the different functions and use of the two categories of roads. Accidents were grouped into 2 broad categories. Details of the data and study methodology are described, and the results are presented and discussed.<p />",
