abstract="This article notes the increasing frequency of accidents during the transportation of hazardous materials (haz-mat) and the need for ITE (Institute of Transportation Engineers) members to play a larger role in deciding the who, what, where, and when of moving such dangerous commodities. The concerns about haz-mat movements and haz-mat accidents are outlined, and rules and regulations currently followed are noted. Statistics regarding haz-mat accidents are discussed. It is suggested that ITE undertake a thorough analysis of haz-mat's impact on the transportation system. ITE should act as a catalyst in bringing together the efforts of knowledgeable professionals active in this field. ITE should also take a policy position on the haz-mat issue and initiate a program to raise the awareness of professionals and the public.<p />",
