abstract="The City of San Diego is about to receive its first centrally controlled computerized traffic signal system. The system will initially include 151 intersections in the CBD with expansion capability to control up to 300 intersections. The system was designed by PRC Engineering who was also responsible for the construction management, and the software development and integration. Although none of the features or concepts of the San Diego system are new, San Diego is the first system to combine many of these features into a totally integrated and centrally controlled system, making it one of the most technologically advanced systems being implemented. It is therefore not surprising that many of the concepts inherent in this system are being applied to designs for systems in cities such as Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Washington, D. C.<p />",
