abstract="A study was made on a 2-lane highway in San Francisco with steep vertical grades and horizontal curves, to evaluate the extent to which accidents were reduced as as result of pavement grooving, and whether the reduction was statistically significant. This is a discussion on how the relevant data were gathered and how the significance of improvement was determined. It was found that pavement grooving is effective in reducing wet-pavement accidents. Its effects on dry-pavement accidents is insignificant. The curves of significance test and the Poisson test are useful methods for statistically determining the significance of improvements.<p />",
