abstract="This is a summary of a full report by the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Technical Committee 5B-4 which bears the same title. While the full report contains a literature review of median acceleration lanes (MALs) and 2 Way Left Turn Lanes (2WLTLs) as well as a survey of local and state highway officials concerning their current use and opinions of MALs and 2WLTLs, this article summarizes only the results of the survey and not the literature review. The survey of highway and traffic agencies in Canada and the United States was conducted using a questionnaire consisting of a covering letter, followed by a set of questions concerning the extent to which the agency used MALs and 2WLTLs and a data sheet for each location where either a MAL or a 2WLTL was used. A total of 71 useful responses were received and analyzed, 48 from the United States and 23 from Canada. Of these, 56 were from municipal agencies and 15 from provincial and state governments.<p />",
