abstract="This is a report of a case in which a school superintendent requested and obtained traffic signals or flashiing beacons in order to reduce the speed of traffic passing through the school zone, so that the school children could cross the road safely at designated crossings. Because of the prevailing high speeds, flashing yellow beacons were installed in addition to the traffic signs and pavement markings. The following traffic controls were installed: yellow crosswalks; 'SLOW SCHOOL XING pavement legends; flashing yellow beacons; and 25 mph speed limit signs in advance of the flashing beacons. The study results showed a considerable reduction in average speeds (from 38 mph to 31 mph) during the periods when the advance school flashers were operating. Additional studies are suggested.<p />",
