abstract="This article, which analyzes the cost-effectiveness of various roadway inventory procedures, first classifies and describes the inventories compiled by highway agencies for selected features. The cost of three alternative inventory methods are then compared, namely, manual methods, photologging, and videologging. It was found that for low density and small urban and rural areas, the manual method is the most cost-effective if only one type of inventory is to be developed. For medium- and large-sized urban areas, videologging seems be economical if only one type of inventory is contemplated. Multipurpose inventory efforts seem to favor photologging.<p />",
