abstract="This article briefly reviews the findings of a 19-member National Research Council committee that examined the costs and benefits of the 55 mph National Maximum Speed Limit and whether the laws of individual states provided a "substantial deterrent" to speeding violations. The committee's basic conclusion was that, because of the "substantial benefits to safety," the 55 mph National Maximum Speed Limit "should be retained on almost all of the nation's highways," but the method for determining federal compliance with the law should be changed to better reflect safety priorities. A list of committee members is included.
",
