abstract="This technical note describes a survey that was sent to selected American and Canadian agencies concerning current practice with regards to backup power for traffic signal installations. Based on the nature of the survey responses, no clear pattern for establishing guidelines was apparent. Several important items of information gained from the survey are listed. The author recommends that every state or province adopt legislation defining traffic control at signalized intersections in the event of power failure.<p />",
