abstract="A study is reported which focused on documenting the current practices concerning the manufacture, installation, and operation of audible pedestrian signals. The study documented the types of devices in use and recommended conditions under which the installation of such devices are advisable. Traffic, geometric and environmental conditions are among those criteria considered. The extent of benefits and drawbacks to the visually impaired, as well as to other pedestrians, has also been considered. Suggestions are made regarding the need for uniform nationwide standards for installation and operation of these devices.<p />",
