abstract="For the first time ever, the United Nations will be debating road safety in its General Assembly plenary session. The debate should set in motion the action and collaboration needed by countries and international aid agencies to reduce the death and injury toll caused by unsafe roads. Key components of this resolution are holding a UN-sponsored ministerial meeting to gain worldwide government support for road safety; dedicating 5-10% of future road-building project costs to safety; and specific action plans that include improved policies for road users, better vehicles and safer road designs for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. The expertise of transportation engineers and political commitment will both be required in this global road safety effort.<p />",
