abstract="The Institute of Transportation Engineers 2008 Technical Conference and Exhibit provided a forum for discussion of various aspects of safety from the federal to the local level. This feature describes the Planning/Data and Analysis Tools track at the conference. The six sessions making up this track presented information on the application of safety research; the development and implementation of safety programs; and a range of new analysis tools that will facilitate the incorporation of safety in transportation planning. Safety should be quantified in order to put it on even ground with other priorities that must be balanced in planning. Agencies increasingly are using technology to more effective capture and share safety data.<p />",
