abstract="The Institute of Transportation Engineers 2008 Technical Conference and Exhibit, with the theme of &quot;Making a Difference in Transportation Safety,&quot; provided a forum for discussion of various aspects of safety from the federal to the local level. This feature summarizes the seven sessions that made up the engineering/design/operations track of the conference. These sessions highlighted access management, engineering countermeasures, roundabout safety, creating safer freeways, low-cost safety measures, road safety evaluations, and intersection safety. Although much progress has been made in the area of highway and traffic safety from the engineering/design/operations perspective, there still remain many challenges.<p />",
