abstract="This article describes a pilot program that incorporates traffic safety and health promotion to make targeted intersections more senior-friendly. The program was a partnership with the New Jersey Department of Transportation and the Department of Health and Senior Services. Three locations that represented a cross-section of roadway types and environments were chosen for the pilot program. Engineering, education and enforcement improvements were identified to improve traffic safety. The second component of the pilot program was an endeavor to promote walking and healthy living among the senior population. Program participants received a logbook, hints on safe walking, and achievement certificates for regular walking. The walking program was introduced at each of the pilot locations. The recommended improvements for each location have been steadily implemented over the past several years. Early indications suggest that the improvements have made a positive difference in the safety of those locations.<p />",
