abstract="Roads have come to occupy a dominant position in the transportation system of the country. An investment of about Rs 85,000 crore has been made in the expansion and upgrading of the road network since the beginning of the first five-year plan. Hence, there is a growing need for strategic management of the national roadway network to preserve this large capital investment. Pavement management activities require accurate, fast and cost effective pavement test techniques to record current status of the pavement structures in a rapid manner. Pavement profile and deflection are good indications of quality of pavement. Laser based system can measure road profile and deflection accurately while travelling at normal traffic speed. Laser based bridge deflection system has been developed that can reduce the cost of load-rating the bridges.<p />",
