abstract="Sikkim, India has a rugged topography with landslides common in the monsoon and winter rains. Data were collected on road accidents in Sikkim for 1994-2000. The distribution of accidents by vehicle type (truck, bus, mini bus, car/jeep/taxi, two wheeled vehicle, other heavy vehicle) is presented. Driver fault was the most common cause of accidents, followed by mechanical defects. Statistics are given on the distribution of accidents by class of road (national highway, state highway, other roads). The influence of month and time of day on accident rates is considered. The organisations concerned in road safety in Sikkim are listed. Measures to improve road safety are described: engineering measures (improved road geometry, traffic control signals and road markings, improved maintenance); enforcement measures relating to roadworthiness of vehicles, driving skills and overloading; and education of road users.<p />",
