abstract="This article addresses the need in India for a system of road safety measures. The author sees this in terms of a national mission, to be administered at national and regional level. Aspects considered are the education of school children in road safety; training of traffic police; training of truck and bus drivers; reorganization of the vehicle and driver licensing systems; an accident data collection system; and more enforceable and effective legislation against offenders. Such a national mission would require an efficient publicity campaign.<p />",
