abstract="This article concerns the need to audit India's major roads to find where greater safety measures need to be taken. The national highways and state highways constitute about seven per cent of the total road network but experience over sixty per cent of the fatalities. Increasing speeds combined with poor road engineering seem to be responsible for many accidents. A road safety audit should be prioritised for efficiency. Accident data should be collected and field studies carried out on traffic speed and features of the road environment which could contribute to accidents. Especially in urban areas, traffic calming measures could be implemented.<p />",
