abstract="This article comments on the history of traffic safety measures undertaken in Japan since the 1960s when the accident rate became a major public concern, with the intent of addressing similar concerns in India. The process of improving road safety started with analysis of accident data and three programs of operation were conceived: fundamental long-term safety principles; projects to improve facilities to prevent accidents; and a road improvement program. The aspects considered include a safer road environment, improved and strengthened legislation, traffic safety education, use of improved technology, and medical care systems. The implementation process involves selecting a location, identifying problems and planning improvements, implementation, and evaluation. Traffic safety measures are to be promoted through improved information technology.<p />",
