abstract="This article describes safety measures that should be put into practice during road maintenance work in India. Maintenance is broken down into work not affecting the carriageway, requiring warning signs; work requiring single lane closure, needing traffic control and a protective work area; and work requiring total road closure and the building of a temporary diversion road. Urban road maintenance is further complicated by heavy traffic and should be restricted where possible to night working. All work left overnight must be lit. Safety at work, the responsibility of both employer and employees, is discussed, with basic safety measures required as a minimum.<p />",
