abstract="The main problems with roads in India are given as excessive vehicle weight, neglect of maintenance, lack of appropriate traffic regulations and their enforcement, and the consequences of accidents. In some States, pavement construction standards are inadequate for commercial vehicle use. Pavements in one district of Uttar Pradesh in 1996 are only 50% of the required thickness. Inadequate financing is considered a major problem. Road pricing, and vehicle and other forms of taxation enable roads and their maintenance to be self-financing. Misuse of roads for penning cattle, rubbish disposal and for draining floodwater is noted. The economic losses resulting from the poor state of roads are outlined.<p />",
