abstract="This paper presents a study of vehicles' acceleration characteristics during overtaking manoeuvres on two-lane dual carriageways. Vehicles were observed on a 60km stretch of Highway No. 5 in Orissa State, India. For the purpose of this research, an overtaking manoeuvre was subdivided into four successive stages. Data during an overtaking manoeuvre were collected by a team of three observers in a test vehicle, driven at constant speed to allow other vehicles to overtake it. Observations were taken on overtaking lorries, buses, and cars; their observed timings are tabulated. Graphs are displayed which show the distance-time curves of the test vehicle, and distance-time, speed-time, and acceleration curves of overtaking vehicles, for different overtaking time groups of lorries, buses, and cars. Overtaking times were largest for lorries and smallest for cars, and intermediate for buses. For a given vehicle type, acceleration rate was variable, higher for shorter overtaking times, and constant for moderate overtaking times; speed was constant for higher overtaking times.<p />",
