abstract="This article presents a history of traffic controllers, starting with the first device operated in 1868 in London, through today's intelligent transportation systems and applying them to tunnel conditions. Incident management is a key job, but many tunnels suffer from aging infrastructure, which includes legacy computer systems with faulty functionality. An innovative system for the Monitor-Merrimac Bridge Tunnel is described. Fault tolerance solutions are necessary to provide backups and continuous operation. The article explains other techniques for dealing with legacy equipment and promising future advances.<p />",
