abstract="For the past year or so, the innovative Traffic Engineering Division of Tucson, AZ, has been using uninterruptible power systems (UPS) to provide emergency back-up power for computerized traffic signal systems. The purpose is to provide a hedge against signal downtime during power outages, and by so doing enhance public safety on the interstate where it intersects with frontage roads in key places about town. Other installations are being contemplated in conjunction with new roadway construction projects that are currently or soon will be underway.<p />",
