abstract="Some of the ideas nascent in the notion of a model are here explored in a preliminary way. In particular we ask what the special insight afforded by the mathematical model may be and suggest that the notion of craftsmanship in mathematical modelling can provide a via media between the formalistic and subjective extremes, at once doing justice to the modeller's mental activity and providing a basis for dialogue and discussion.<p />",
