Abstract

"Does violence lead to health?" and "Why would an inmate swallow razorblade?" are two of the captivating subheading questions, answered by Landon Kuester in his book Violence in pursuit of health: Living with HIV in the American Prison System. In an era of mass incarceration, this book strives to delve deeper into how violence, using two institutionally referred concepts of degradation ("illicit or uncitizenly behaviour done for the pursuit of rights and resource") and prison games ("relational-social process through which degradation occurs between inmates and staff"), is initiated, sustained, but justified for HIV inmates acquiring health and resources within the structural constraints of a US state prison.
