Abstract

The current study examines principals' perspectives on school mental health needs, professional development in relation to school mental health, and areas of successful practice, and does so within a specified domain of education: private, Catholic, elementary schools in the United States. The study draws on survey data producing some of the first representative estimates of mental health services and staffing in private schools. Principals from 346 elementary schools shared their perspectives on three key areas: challenges in meeting student mental health needs, what types of professional development they desire, and the kinds of effective practice that are currently operative in their schools.
