Abstract

Domestic violence is not only a problem of physical and psychological abuse but also has a sexual implication. However, statistical data on sexual abuse are not well-known or come from sectorized sources that do not allow for global values.
This study aims to supply information on the alterations in sexuality within domestic violence. Works published in the Medline, Healthstar, Psyinfo and Biological Abstracts data bases in the 1995-2004 period have been consulted.
Sexual abuse gives rise to psychological disorders such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and low self-esteem. In the sexual aspect, it is difficult for maltreated women to prevent health problems such as sexual transmission diseases or HIV. They have a negative attitude toward sexuality.
Sexual violence is an important problem at present. Governments should provide social and medical means for attention to the victims and their treatment and study the causes of the violence. At present, more studies are needed to know the alterations of sexuality in domestic violence and develop new strategies.
