Abstract

Child abuse and neglect continue to gain prominence as a public health problem in the United States. Ocular injuries are common. Since ocular signs of abuse are diverse, history-taking is extremely important. Any reasonable suspicion of child abuse merits intervention. All 50 states have laws mandating reports of suspected child abuse as well as penalties for failure to report. Good-faith reports are protected from civil liability.
