Abstract

The influence of age on the tolerance of thoracic injury are examined. This is done by evaluating the mechanical characteristics of human bones and soft tissues and by investigating results determined in thoracic impact test to human cadavers. It is shown that the reduction in injury tolerance from the young age group to the elderly group is roughly 20% under blunt frontal impact loading conditions and is as much as 70% under belt loading conditions. Comparisons of cadaver data and living human data show that cadaver data on the elderly overestimates the decreases in mechanical properties with age.
