Abstract

As the evidence connecting shame to certain psychological disorders and addictions mounts, innovative strategies for addressing shame in college-level health education courses should be examined. Understanding shame as it relates to personal and interpersonal development will offer health educators a more comprehensive representation of the psychosocial health of their students. Shame has been identified as a common factor in the shame-based syndromes of physical abuse, sexual abuse, addictive disorders, and eating disorders, although much of the information on shame has focused on clinical applications within the field of psychology with few direct references to health education. Implications and strategies for addressing shame-based issues in college-level health education courses are addressed.
